ABSTRACT

This study examines passenger self-awareness and preparedness during emergency evacuations on the Light Rail Transit Sumatera Selatan (LRT Sumsel) system in Palembang, Indonesia, addressing the often-overlooked human factor in rail safety management. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combines a systematic literature review, case study analysis, and an on-site questionnaire survey of 585 passengers across all LRT Sumsel stations. Passenger self-awareness was assessed in
terms of knowledge of emergency exits, signage, and equipment, while preparedness focused on confidence to act, remain calm, and follow evacuation procedures. The findings indicate that although most passengers are aware of emergency features, a notable gap exists between awareness and preparedness, with nearly one-third unsure of how to act during an actual emergency. Ride frequency emerged as the most significant factor, with frequent riders reporting higher confidence but lower attention to safety information. The study concludes that current safety measures are effective in raising awareness but insufficient in ensuring behavioural readiness, highlighting the need for more practical, experience-based preparedness strategies to improve evacuation outcomes in light rail systems.
