The UK Government’s TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU) aims to enhance connectivity and support local economies along the TransPennine railway, linking cities like Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, and Newcastle. A key focus is upgrading the Huddersfield to Dewsbury section, which is currently limited by a two track system that hampers punctuality, speed, and service levels. The project will expand this section to four tracks, build a new Ravensthorpe Station, upgrade three existing stations, separate junctions, and line electrification. A quantitative study assessed the capacity improvements by comparing the current two track system with the proposed four-track layout using data collection, integration, and capacity consumption analysis. The UIC 406 method was adapted to model train operations, factoring in parameters like train acceleration, speed, and length. Results show that the four track system resolves capacity issues by separating fast and slow services, improving efficiency and flexibility for express trains. However, slow tracks face ongoing constraints due to mixed traffic, especially freight trains. While the upgrade boosts capacity and efficiency, careful management of train interactions is vital for long-term reliability.
